What is Public Access?

Public access is the scheme whereby members of the public and businesses are able to instruct barristers directly.

Not all work is suitable for public access. I assess whether to take on a specific case on a case by case basis. Relevant factors will include my availability, my current workload, the nature of the case and the type of work that needs to be undertaken.

In some cases, I will refer the client to a solicitor where I believe that to be in the best interest of the client. Sometimes, I will agree with the lay client to undertake some work, for example the drafting of a document or the provision of advice, before a case is referred to a solicitor. If I believe that a solicitor will be required, I will highlight this when the possibility arises.
